Co-founded by Maria Deraismes and George Martin in 1893, the masonic order "DROIT HUMAIN was created," according to the organization's Website, "out of a marvelous dream, to unite humanity despite all the barriers, ethnic groups, geopolitics, religions and cultures. . .(and to) begin the liberation of women."
Accordingly, the facade inscriptions proclaim the "Right of Humankind" and "In humankind, the woman has the same duties as the man. She should have the same rights in the family and in society."
References to Egyptian art and architecture are typical of Masonic architecture, as Freemasons interpret Ancient Egypt as the "source of all knowledge of architecture and of all wisdom" (Curl 2005, p. 230). The large portico of this lodge features a prominent cavetto cornice, with modified solar disks substituting the Masonic pyramid for the sun in the center, flared lotus capitals, and a balustrade with alternating ankhs (the Egyptian symbol of life) and columns.
